Circulating basophilic leucocyte counts in the newborn.
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent evidence that histamine is present in basophilic kucocytes (Graham, Wheelwright, Parish, Marks and Lowry, 1952; Code and Mitchell, 1954) as well as in tissue mast cells (Riley and West, 1953) has created fresh interest in these cells. Knowledge of variations in the number of crulating basophils is scanty owing to the inaccuracy of smear techniques, but the introduction of a chamber-counting method (Moore and James, 1953) has made it possible to measure even small changes with considerable accuracy. Using this method, basophils have been counted in the capillary blood of healthy infants during the newborn period.

Leucocyte and erythrocyte counts during a multi-stage cycling race ('the Milk Race').
Venous blood samples were taken from eight competitors in mid-evening after a racing day, and in the early morning before the next day's race, three times during the course of the Milk Race, 1992. These were used to gather information about the changes in circulating leucocyte levels in response to the exceptionally high sustained daily workload required during a major multi-stage race. The pri...

Xanthou, M. (1972). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 47, 741. Leucocyte blood picture in ill newborn babies. Serial blood leucocyte counts were made on 35 ill preterm and term babies during the first 28 days of life. Ill babies with no clinical or bacteriological evidence of infection showed no changes in the blood leucocytes during the neonatal period when compared with normal babies. The cha...

A one-day-old male Holstein calf was presented with a palpable subcutaneous mass, extending from the parotid to the orbital region, involving the entire right side of the face and a large flabby mass without any evidence of inflammation or edema on the tongue. Macroscopically, the cut surface of the lingual mass appeared slightly lobulated, pink, with a mucoid appearance and gelatinous consiste...
متن کاملFetal leucocyte count in rhesus disease.
The effect of fetal anaemia on the total and differential leucocyte counts was studied by examining blood samples obtained by cordocentesis from 177 previously untransfused rhesus affected fetuses at 17-36 weeks' gestation. The mean fetal total leucocyte, lymphocyte, and monocyte counts were significantly lower than the corresponding values in normal controls and there were significant associat...
متن کاملAcute lung injury after aortic surgery: the relation between lung and leg microvascular permeability to 111indium-labelled transferrin and circulating mediators.
BACKGROUND Aortic surgery is a risk factor for acute lung injury and this may relate to ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) of the lower body and release of inflammatory mediators. The aim of this study was to define the changes in microvascular protein permeability and circulating inflammatory mediators after aortic surgery. METHODS In 11 consecutive patients who underwent elective aortic surgery mi...
